UK Election Day: I think The Telegraph's Matt cartoon just about sums things up

Twitter users are more likely than members of other social networks to interact with brands

Twitter users are more likely than members of other social networks to interact with brands and are less averse to advertising, according to a report from Edison Research.

The report, Twitter Usage in America 2010, paints a portrait of a social network that has exploded in recognition while lagging in actual users. It also contains some surprising demographic insights into the Twitter population. The study surveyed 1,753 Americans age 12 and over via telephone interviews in February 2010.

According to the report:

  • 51 percent of Twitter users said they follow at least one brand on a social network
  • 16 percent for users of all social networks
  • 42 percent of Twitter users said they use it to learn about products or services
  • 41 percent said they use it to provide opinions about them
  • 28 percent use Twitter to look for sales or discounts
  • 21 percent use it to purchase products or services
  • 19 percent use it to seek customer support

But what may really grab the attention of marketers on Twitter - and Twitter itself - is what the report found about attitudes toward advertising. Fifty percent said that their use of Twitter would be unaffected if the service began incorporating targeted advertising. (Fifteen percent said they would stop using Twitter all together, but 16 percent said they would use it more.)

Among the report's other findings was the disproportionate number of African-Americans tweeting: roughly 25 percent of Twitter users are black, which is about double the black population of the U.S. Webster was at a loss to explain the group's overrepresentation, but pointed out that "if you follow the trending topics on Twitter on an average day, you'll see a lot of topics and themes that are very relevant to African Americans. I also think there's a real conversational usage of Twitter for Africa Americans that may be stronger than for other cohorts who are using the service."

Born in Turkey, served in the Roman Army, slayed a dragon and eventually beheaded in Palestine. Happy St George's Day

Saint George is popularly identified with England and English ideals of honour, bravery and gallantry, but actually he wasn’t English at all.

Quick Facts about St George:

  • Born in Turkey (in Cappadocia)
  • Lived in 3rd century
  • His parents were Christian
  • Became a Roman soldier
  • Protested against Rome's persecution of Christians
  • Imprisoned and tortured, but stayed true to his faith
  • Beheaded at Lydda in Palestine

St. George is believed to have been born in Eastern Turkey in the year A.D. 270 and at the age of seventeen joined the Roman army where he became renowned for his bravery

When the pagan Emperor Diocletian started persecuting Christians, St. George pleaded with the Emperor to spare their lives. However, St. George's pleas fell on deaf ears and it is thought that the Emperor Diocletian tried to make St. George deny his faith in Christ by torturing him. Instead St George showed incredible courage and faith and was finally beheaded near Lydda in Palestine on 23 April, 303.

The most famous legend of Saint George is of him slaying a dragon. In the Middle Ages the dragon was commonly used to represent the Devil. The slaying of the dragon by St George was first credited to him in the twelfth century, long after his death. It is therefore likely that the many stories connected with St George's name are fictitious. There are many versions of the story and most versions agree that:

  1. A town was terrorised by a dragon.
  2. A young princess was offered to the dragon
  3. When George heard about this he rode into the village
  4. George slayed the dragon and rescued the princess

In 1222, the Council of Oxford declared April 23 to be St George’s Day and he replaced Edward the Confessor as England’s patron saint in the 14th century. In 1415, April 23 was made a national feast day.

Google now accepts reviews published on behalf of brands themselves by integrating Social Shopping Platforms

From the searchenginewatch blog:

Now retailers and manufacturers can automatically feed full-text product reviews to Google and Google Product Search, via Bazaarvoice's Social Commerce platform.

Reviews have been a mainstay of Google Product Search for awhile, but what is distinctly new is that reviews have previously been sourced from a small subset of large independent publications such as Cnet, or large e-commerce websites like Amazon.

However, with integration of Bazaarvoice's 'SyndicateVoice for Search' offering, Google now accepts reviews published on behalf of brands themselves. This move will essentially open up the long tail of sources for reviews and, more importantly, accommodate the behavioral long tail of Internet access points. Bazaarvoice's shopping stats page suggests that online advertising has an impact on in-store traffic to brick-and-mortar stores, arguably via mobile, where users are searching for reviews of products while they are in-store or using Twitter to ask and provide product information.

A new report shows that 6.8% Of Business Internet Traffic Goes To Facebook

A report from the Network Box shows that 6.8 percent of all the URLs accessed by businesses goes to Facebook and 10 percent of internet bandwidth goes to Youtube.  The study analyzed 13 billion URLs accessed by businesses and studied business bandwidths to find results, and found Facebook and Youtube leading other companies like Google and Yahoo.

The report also found that Google attracted 3.4 percent of all URLs, followed by Yahoo!’s image server YIMG at 2.8 percent and Yahoo! itself with 2.4 percent.  DoubleClick, the banner ad provider got 1.7 percent of all URL traffic, due to their massive banner network and its presence on a variety of pages.  In the traffic category, Facebook used 4.5 percent of all bandwidth, Windows Update used 3.3 percent, Yimg used 2.7 percent and Google used 2.5 percent.

Foursquare Cops: funny video on losing your Mayorship on Foursquare

I cant decide why I love Foursquare so much. All I know is that I have this voyerustic fascination for using the service and letting my friends know where 'I'm at'. (I find it irritating to do this on Twitter which I prefer to use for proper business).

And with fewer users on Foursquare in the UK it doesnt take long to gather up your Mayorships. I have already manged to snaffle one away from somebody else who then sent me a displeased twitter message. Hey, use it or lose it that's what I say.

Long live Foursquare. Enjoy the video -
